Plant-based Sausage Rolls

A while ago after one massive fail, I told you guys I would eventually nail the plant-based and gluten free sausage roll. And I have finally done it!!

Did anyone else grow up eating those little party pies and sausage rolls? I use to love the days when I would come home from school and Mum would make them for us kiddies! Well these are my plant-based, gluten-free & healthier version of those sausage rolls👏🏼

Ingredients

Filling

  • 1/2 packet Flexible Foods plant-based original mince (DC: ELISE15)

  • 1 vegan egg

  • 1 small carrot, grated

  • 5 button mushrooms, chopped

  • 1/2 onion, diced (optional)

  • 1 tsp paprika

  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley

  • 2 tbsp tomato sauce

  • 1.5 tbsp GF Worcestershire sauce

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Pastry

  • 2 cups chickpea flour

  • Pinch of salt

  • 1/3 cup olive oil

  • Up to 1/2 cup water

Method

Preheat oven to 180C, fan-forced.

For the filling:

  1. Pour mince into a non-stick pan with 200ml of water. Cook over medium heat, covered, for 4 mins, the uncovered for 1 min.

  2. Place mince & remaining filling ingredients in a food processor & process until a smooth filling forms.

  3. Set aside & move onto pastry.

For the pastry:

  1. Combine dry ingredients in blender then add oil, process slowly & slowly add water until dough forms.

  2. Roll out flat on a floured board as thin as you can get it without it breaking. Trim into a rectangle, roughly 30 x 10cm & place filling along long side. Careful not to overfill.

  3. Gently roll from the filling end. Press the edge firmly to seal.

  4. Repeat with remaining pastry & filling.

  5. Place on a lined baking tray, brush with some almond milk & top with a sprinkle of sesame seeds. Place in the oven to bake for 15-20 mins or until golden.

The Flexible Foods plant-based mince I used in this recipe is made from pea protein and is a great source of protein, iron and fibre! It's also gluten, soy and preservative free and I can't even tell you how flipping good it tastes! You'll just have to try it for yourself! its my favourite plant-based mince substitute and so easy to work with.
