Shakti Mats are used for a variety of purposes, but the most common is to help achieve a deep restful sleep; relax muscles; and improve circulation. I’ve been using my Shakti Mat for over 3 months now, so I thought I would share my honest thoughts and results using from using it.
What initially attracted me to these Mats were the claims of helping overcome insomnia. A couple months back before I purchased my Shakti, I was suffering from severe insomnia and broken sleep. I would lie awake for hours before falling asleep, and when I did finally get to sleep, like clock work I would wake up at 3am and not be able to fall asleep again. Agh, it was so draining and I was forever tired as a result!
But before I get more into this and my review of the Shatki Mat, I’ll give you a quick run down on what a Shatki Mat is and how I use it..
What is a Shakti Mat?
A Shakti Mat is simply a soft foam mat with 6,000 spikes or ‘points’ on the top. Its a self-treatment form of acupressure. In a 20 minute session on the Mat, it can support deep, restful sleep; muscle relaxation; recovery from headaches; recovery from injury; improved circulation; and overall wellness of the mind and body.
How I use the Shakti Mat
There’s many ways to use the Mat depending on the results your after, but because I use it to relax and heal my insomnia and broken sleep, I chose to lie on my back with the Mat on the floor or on my bed. I lie on it bare backed to get a deeper effect, but some people find it easier to start with a shirt on to get use to the pressure.
I’ll usually lie on the mat from anywhere between 15-30 minutes before bed, depending on how much time I have, but I would definitely recommend laying on it for at least 15 minutes to allow it to work its magic.
My Shakti Mat Review
For me, the Shakti Mat as worked wonders! As I mentioned, I purchased it with the hope it would heal my insomnia and broken sleep patterns. And after the first session on the Mat, it did just that.
Yes, the initial few 10 or so minutes on the Mat was uncomfortable and somewhat painful, but I just breathed through the pain – I found meditating was a great way to distract myself from the initial pain and discomfort.
After 10 or so minutes, the pain just disappeared and it was replaced with the most relaxing, warming feeling. It was like my whole back was flooded with warmth and it felt almost like I was floating on a cloud (strange considering I was lying on 6,000 spikes!). I was no longer experiencing any pain, and slowly my whole body was overcome with the most relaxing feeling.
I lie on it for about 30 minutes just before bed in a dark room. While doing so, I love to put on a meditation track or ocean wave sounds because I find these just add to the relaxation I experience on the mat and help to wind down and switch off my mind before bed.
After using the Mat now for over 3 months, I’ve noticed a massive improvement in my sleep. Yay! I’m able to get to sleep so much easier and actually stay asleep. No more waking up at 3am in the morning and lying awake for hours. My sleep is also a lot deeper. I find I’m waking up feeling refreshed as opposed to waking up feeling like I had no sleep at all. The pain/discomfort I experienced in my first session; I don’t experience at all now. My back has become accustomed to the acupressure and the warm, comforting, relaxation feeling now kicks in instantly.
Laying on my Shakti has become part of my nightly routine – its a non-negotiable. If I go away overnight or over the weekend, it comes with me – my little travelling ‘happiness in a bag’. Seriously the best $69.00 I’ve ever spent. And I couldn’t recommend this product more (and I recommend it to everyone – my sister and bestie have already gone online and bought their own after trying mine!). I’m yet to use it for anything aside from aiding my sleep at night, but I definitely want to give it a try on my legs to aid muscle recovery soon.
Have you got a Shakti Mat? Would love to hear your thoughts on it too!
